Medevac Alabama now offers wheelchair van transportation for patients and residents who do not require an ambulance but still need safe, assisted medical transportation.

Our wheelchair van service is designed for patients who can travel seated in a wheelchair but need help getting to and from medical appointments, dialysis, hospital discharges, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, and other approved destinations.

When to Use Wheelchair Van Service

Wheelchair van transport may be appropriate for patients who:

• Use a wheelchair for mobility

• Can safely remain seated during transport

• Do not require stretcher transport

• Do not require medical monitoring during transport

• Need assistance getting from a residence or facility to an appointment

• Need dependable non-emergency transportation

Wheelchair Van vs. Ambulance

A wheelchair van is not an ambulance. It is intended for patients who can safely ride seated and do not require EMS care, cardiac monitoring, oxygen management, stretcher transport, or medical intervention during the trip.

Patients who are bed confined, unable to sit safely, require medical monitoring, require oxygen they cannot self-administer, or need medical care during transport may require ambulance transport instead.

Billing and Coverage

Wheelchair van transportation is a lower level of non-emergency medical transportation than ambulance service. It is intended for patients who can safely travel seated in a wheelchair and do not require stretcher transport, EMS monitoring, oxygen management, or medical care during transport.

Routine wheelchair van service is generally arranged as a private-pay or facility-contracted service. Medevac Alabama provides ambulance transportation for Medicare and Medicaid patients when ambulance medical necessity requirements are met. However, Medevac Alabama does not participate in, accept assignment for, or bill Alabama Medicaid or federal Medicare for wheelchair van services. This matches the contract language stating that wheelchair van service is a private-pay, institutional-contract service and is not billed to Alabama Medicaid or federal Medicare.

Medevac Alabama does provide VA wheelchair van service through direct VA arrangement. All wheelchair van transports for VA patients must be prearranged by the VA.
